International GT Open - Ferrari on top at Imola

Maranello, 1 May – The International GT Open season got underway this weekend at Imola with a fantastic Ferrari triple in Race 1. The F430 GT2 entered by Vittoria Competizioni and driven by the duo of Marco Frezza-Juan Manuel Lopez made it to the topmost step of the podium, joined in second place by the AF Corse F430 GT2 crewed by Alessandro Garofano-Luca Rangoni, while third went to the JMB Racing F430 GT2 of Soheil Ayari-Nicolas Misslin. The race was closely contested, having started behind the Safety Car, because of a sudden burst of rain. Behind the top three Ferraris, fourth place overall went to the fastest of the Porsches, the Autorlando Sport car finishing first in the GTS class in the hands of Gianluca Roda-Fabio Babini. Making up the rest of the GTS podium were the Raceteam Porsche driven by Thomas Gruber and Marco Seefried and the duo of Stefano Bizzarri-Andrea Rizzoli at the wheel of an AF Corse Ferrari 458 Itaia GT3.

Race 2 saw an end of Ferrari’s dominance with victory going to the Autorlando Porche of Andrea Ceccato-Alvaro Barba, who finished ahead of the Miguel Ramos-Raffaele Giammaria F430 GT2 (Racing team Edil-Cris) and another 458 Italia GT2 in the hands of Andrea Contermini-Emanuele Moncini (Scuderia Villorba Corse.) Key to the outcome of the race was Barba’s attack on poleman Juan Manuel Lopez, who dominated the early stages. Ramos-Giammaria produced a great performance, quickly getting by Moncini before closing to within four tenths of the leader. In fact, Moncini finished third, teamed with Montermini for the Villorba team, who having got to grips with the new Ferrari 458 Italia GT2, improved throughout the weekend. In fourth place came the winners of Race 1, Frezza and Lopez, which was enough for them to maintain the lead in the championship, while the GTS leaders, Lorenzo Bontempelli and Stefano Gattuso in the 458 Italia GT3 came home fifth overall.

The International GT Open series contenders will be back in action over the weekend of 14 and 15 May at the Magny-Cours circuit for the second of eight rounds this season.

Round 3: GT Open Spa-Francorchamps

Circuit

Spa-Francorchamps

GT Open – Another podium for Ferrari at Spa
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 26 June – After yesterday’s win for the Ferrari 458 Italia GT2, in the hands of Andrea Montermini and Emanuele Moncini in the first GT Open series race at Spa-Francorchamps, victory in Race 2 went to the other Scuderia Villorba Corse car, the F430 GTC driven by Marco Frezza and Cochito Lopez, for whom this was win number three this season, ensuring them the lead in the championship. The Italian-Argentine crew drove an impeccable race which saw them finish ahead of the Philipp Peter-Michal Broniszewski (Kessel Racing) 458 Italia GT2, who made it to the podium for the first time this year. Race 1 winners, Montermini and Moncini finished third this time but were then disqualified for using unmarked tyres. This left the final step of the podium free for the AF Corse Ferrari 430 GTC driven by Alessandro Garofano-Luca Rangoni. In GTS, the top spot went to the Kessel Racing 458 Italia GT3 of Stefano Gattuso and Lorenzo Bontempelli, the latter also competing in this year’s Italian series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli. The duo finished fourth in the category and thirteenth overall. The GT Open series is back on track right from next weekend at the Nurburgring for the fourth of eight rounds this year.

GT Open – Ferrari unbeatable at Brands Hatch
Source: Ferrari

Maranello 24 July – Once again, Soheil Ayari and Nicolas Marroc took their JMB Racing Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 to victory at the English Brands Hatch circuit, which this weekend staged the fourth round of the GT Open series. The French duo having won Race 1, started from pole and kept the lead throughout, crossing the line ahead of the F430 GTC entered by AF Corse and crewed by Luca Rangoni and Alessandro Garofano, who drove a great race, followed by the Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 entered by Kessel Racing for Lorenzo Bontempelli and Stefano Gattuso, who took their fourth victory in the GTS class.

Fourth overall and third in the Super GT category was the Villorba Corse 458 Italia GT2 driven by Andrea Montermini and Emannuele Moncini, who having crossed the line second, were given a 20 second penalty for not having taken the entire handicap. All the same the result puts the duo in the lead of the overall classification in the championship with a one point advantage over Marco Frezza and Juan Manuel Lopez (F430 GTC – Vittoria Competizioni) who retired on the opening lap after a collision with Miguel Ramos (458 Italia GT2 –Racing Team Edil Cris. Equally close was the battle in the GTS classification with Bontempelli-Gattuso in the lead, just one point ahead of Fabio Babini-Gianluca Roda (Autorlando Sport-Porsche.)

The GT Open championship is back in action at Spielberg (Zeltweg) on the last weekend of August, for the fifth of eight rounds.

GT Open – Ferrari still front runners at Portimao
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 18 September – Victory in the second and final leg of the International GT Open championship at Portimao this weekend went to the crew of Joel Camathias and Soheil Ayari, at the wheel of JMB Racing’s Ferrari 458 Italia GT2. The top podium finish gives Ayari the lead in the drivers’ classification, six points ahead of Miguel Ramos, who finished fourth today, at the wheel of the Edil Cris Ferrari 458 Italia GT2, teamed with Raffaele Giammaria. Second was the Villorba Ferrari in the hands of Andrea Montermini-Emanuele Moncini, followed by the Vittoria Competizioni entered Ferrari F430 GTC, crewed by Marco Frezza-Cochito Lopez.

The battle in the GTS class was also closely contested with victory going to Stefano Bizzarri and Andrea Rizzoli (AF Corse-458 Italia GT3,) who took the flag ahead of current series leaders Bontempelli-Gattuso (Kessel Racing-458 Italia GT3) and the Ford RPM of Alex Mortimer-Peter Bamford, who have shortened the gaps going into fifth and sixth places in the championship. Andrea Rizzoli was making his debut in the series, coming off the back of experience gained in the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli where, last year he took the title in the Coppa Shell for gentleman drivers, while Bontempelli is another name to emerge from the same series, currently running second in the Italian Trofeo Pirelli.

The next and penultimate round of the International GT Open takes place at Monza on 2 October, prior to the final one in Barcelona at the end of October.

GT Open – First win of the year for Kessel Racing’s 458 Italia at Monza
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 2 October - Philipp Peter and Michael Broniszweski put their own seal on the International GT Open championship by taking their first victory of the season. The 458 Italia GT2 run by the Kessel Racing team dominated Race 1 of the weekend’s racing at Monza, displaying clear superiority over their opponents. There was, though, a great battle for second place with Marco Frezza and Juan Manuel Lopez (Vittoria Competizioni) taking the place ahead of Alessandro Garofano and Luca Rangoni (AF Corse) on their first weekend with the new Ferrari 458 Italia GT2.

There was a genuine supremacy shown by the cars from the Maranello manufacturer as Ferrari closed out the first five places; in addition to the first three, the 458 Italia GT2 of Andrea Montermini-Emanuele Moncini (Villorba Corse) was 4th and the Ferrari raced by the two drivers called Alexander Talkanitsa (AT Racing Team) finished 5th.

The protagonists in the International GT Open will be back in action today at 13.15 for the second and final round. Starting from pole position will be Niki Cadei at the wheel of the AF Corse Ferrari F430GTC that he shares with Claudio Sdanewitsch. That grid position came courtesy of an excellent performance in the second round of qualifying in which he finished a few thousandths ahead of the 458 Italia of Andrea Montermini (Villorba Corse).

Ferrari heads the GT Open: Ayari wins the title while Bontempelli and Gattuso triumph in GTS
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 30 October - Soheil Ayari is this year’s International GT Open champion, at the wheel of the JMB Racing 458 Italia GT2. The title went down to the final two laps of the second and final leg when the Frenchman, paired with Joel Camathias overtook his rival in the title race, Raffaele Giammaria in the Racing Team Edil Cris 458 Italia GT2, which put him up to fourth place, enough to take the title.

In GTS, with Autorlando Porsche’s Roda out of the race early on having collided with the AF Corse 458 Italia GT3 of Andrea Rizzoli, Lorenzo Bontempelli and Stefano Gattuso (Kessel Racing) crowned a great season taking their sixth win of the season, enough to give them the driver and team titles. Next weekend, Bontempelli will be back on track at Mugello with the Kessel Racing team, for the final Ferrari Challenge round, where he will be giving it his best shot in the in the Ferrari one-make series.
